The Instituto Libertad (Liberty Institute) is a non-profit think-tank that promotes individual liberty (Liberalism) through conferences, seminars, and publications. We are the only libertarian organization in Costa Rica.
Liberalism is a philosophy that considers individual liberty to be the fundamental value of any prosperous and peaceful society. This belief is based upon a broad school of thinkers such as John Locke, Lord Acton, Frédéric Bastiat, David Hume, Adam Smith, Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, Murray Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, H.L. Mencken, James Buchanan, and Ludwig von Mises, among others.
Liberty is an indivisible concept, meaning that we cannot speak of economic liberty, civil liberty, and political liberty separately. If one is violated, all are violated. The limit to individual liberty is the respect for the liberty of others. According to this principle, the only legitimate function of a government is to protect and guarantee individual liberty.
Economic liberty is the one violated the most and understood the least. For this reason, the Instituto Libertad places greatest emphasis on this dimension of liberty. A person who is free is the absolute owner of the income and property that he or she has acquired honestly, and thus has the inalienable right to trade, buy, sell, rent, pledge, insure, loan, produce, import, export, exchange, give away, receive, and inherit without restrictions of any kind (including permits, quotas, licenses, or patents), and carry out any type of transaction with any other human being without regard to nationality, gender, religious creed, etc.
